Obstetric Hemorrhage Initiative (OHI) 2.0

The Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative (FPQC) is launching the Obstetric Hemorrhage Initiative (OHI) 2.0 on July 1st. This second initiative builds on the success of our first OHI in 2013 and incorporates the updated Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Obstetric Hemorrhage Patient Safety bundle.

Obstetric hemorrhage rates in Florida have risen by 31% from 2017 to 2022, highlighting the need for renewed efforts. In 2020, obstetric hemorrhage accounted for 9.1% of pregnancy-related deaths in Florida, with the Maternal Mortality Review Committee identifying 75% of these deaths as preventable. As the second leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths in the state, obstetric hemorrhage also contributes significantly to short- and long-term complications for mothers and infants. While rates are rising across all demographic groups, they are highest among non-Hispanic Black patients.

OHI 2.0 will equip hospitals with the tools, guidance, and collaborative support needed to standardize protocols for recognizing and managing obstetric hemorrhage effectively.

Participation in OHI 2.0 qualifies as one of the two FPQC initiatives required by Florida statute.
