MCOM Collegia

Collegia Program

The Collegia Program at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM) was established in 2012. The program has now expanded into a non-residential learning community model that engages students in and out of the classroom. The colors were chosen by the student body in 2013 and the logo designs/naming of the different Collegia was created in 2014 after lengthy discussions amongst the student leadership for each class, the MCOM student council, and the faculty advisors. In its current state, the program strives to provide a supportive, reflective, learner-centered environment for the personal and professional development of each individual student, enriching the foundation towards a successful transition into graduate medical training and beyond to a career in medicine.

The key goals for the program are:

  • Professional identity formation.
  • A sense of community and developing long-term personal relationships among your peers.
  • Career planning guidance.
  • Robust strategies for taking care of your physical and emotional health.

We want to provide every student with the guidance they need to successfully build a career in medicine.  At times, one’s personal journey in medicine can be complex. We think that to ensure exceptional student outcomes, a trustworthy and reliable faculty advisor relationship is key.  Also, we’ll help you establish a sense of home at MCOM, and be with you along the way, celebrating each milestone.

Each first-year medical student is placed into 1 of 9 Collegia that is comprised of other students across the four years of the curriculum. There are approximately 20 students per class and 80 students total per collegium. Each collegium is led by a second-year medical student and advised by a faculty member, who also serves as the career advisor for the student throughout medical school.  The SELECT students will remain in their respective Collegia, but will be assigned a different career advisor when they go to Lehigh Valley, PA.
