Busy lives and time constraints can prevent us from taking care of ourselves. But making our own health a priority is the best way to help juggle life’s many demands. Your gynecological exam is a perfect time to share with your health care provider any concerns you may have.
Well-Woman Care
A well-woman visit is an opportunity to evaluate your overall gynecologic health and provide preventive services. It is a good idea to list any medications you are currently taking and any updates to your own and your family’s medical histories. As part of the well-woman visit, there may be a breast and pelvic exams based on your age. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends beginning annual pelvic exams at age 21, unless a patient has signs of a menstrual disorder, vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or other reproductive-related symptom. If you have additional concerns or concerns that are identified by your provider, you may be asked to return for additional appointments, testing or treatments.
Typical topics in a well-woman exam include:
- Pap tests and mammograms
- Birth Control
- Sexually transmitted infections screening
- Menopausal symptoms
