Center for Global Health and Inter-Disciplinary Research

Masters Degree Programs

USF Genomics is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of researchers actively engaged in genomics research. It is a uniquely collaborative environment in which representatives from a variety of academic disciplines use a wide range of approaches (e.g. bench work, bioinformatics, computational modeling, systems biology) to promote understanding of genome structure and function and to use genomic sciences to answer complex questions relating to health, disease and environmental challenges. USF Genomics is not an independent academic program, rather it is an informal community of researchers from the following USF colleges and departments:

  • College of Public Health
  • Morsani College of Medicine
  • College of Nursing
  • College of Marine Science
  • College of Arts and Sciences

Students wishing to join USF Genomics should review the descriptions for each faculty member listed in the Researchers links and explore the corresponding department websites. Prospective students may then apply to any degree program(s) of interest.

Master's Programs

  • Master of Science in Public Health

The MSPH program is a research degree that provides a focus in research design, data collection, analysis and application of research in public health intended to improve and protect the health of populations. It is designed to instruct students in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. It prepares students for jobs in academic public health, as well as public health industry.

    • MSPH in Genomics
The MSPH in Genomics trains students to develop cutting-edge and transferable skills in applied data sciences, such as big data analytics, bio data pattern mining, artificial intelligence (AI) aided bio data research, advanced statistical biocomputing, population data processing in public health and environment sciences. This concentration provides an intense research and technical program for science-oriented students with an interest in genomics of diverse science domains from basic microbiology, vector biology, disease biology to marine sciences.
    • MSPH in Genetic Counseling
The MSPH in genetic counseling is the first program of its kind in the state of Florida. The program includes a unique combination of training in medical genetics/genomics, public health, and communication and counseling skills. Students of this program will gain the technical knowledge and clinical experience needed to compete in the rapidly growing field of genetic counseling and the emerging field of precision medicine.

    Master of Public Health

The MPH degree is the primary professional degree in the field of public health. Students are taught concepts and skills necessary for later jobs in professional public health settings. The MPH degree is offered in each COPH department.

  • Master of Science in Biotechnology

The MS in Biotechnology is an innovative degree program that focuses on preparing students for science-based careers outside of traditional academia. Students are trained in innovative thinking and workforce-relevant skills that appeal to industry employers. This program was specially designed with input from leading organizations to produce employees that fit the unique demands of industrial science.

Master of Science in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

The MS in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology is an interdisciplinary program designed to equip students with an understanding of both traditional biology and computer sciences. Students benefit from both theory based learning and real-work experience through a combination of coursework and a required internship. This program prepares students for careers both in industry and academia.

Master of Science in Medical Sciences: Research Track

This one year program is an intensive course in basic and molecular scientific methods. Students have the opportunity to choose a concentration in Aging and Neuroscience, Molecular Medicine, or Women’s Health. The program is designed to prepare students for future education or research positions.

  • Master of Science in Marine Science

Students select to pursue their degree program in one of the listed departments:

    • Biological Oceanography
    • Chemical Oceanography
    • Geological Oceanography
    • Physical Oceanography
    • Marine Resource Assessment
  • (The College of Arts and Sciences is composed of many different schools and departments. The following list highlights only those departments that house USF Genomics faculty)

    Department of Integrative Biology
