From the Chair of Global, Environmental, and Genomic Health Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Global, Environmental, and Genomic Health Sciences at the University of South Florida College of Public Health! We are excited to have you join our vibrant community of students, teachers, researchers, and practitioners dedicated to advancing the health of populations, across the world and locally, by improving understanding and interventions related to the impacts of environmental and genetic factors on health.

The importance of global and environmental health is clearly visible today all around us, with the continuing threats of infectious disease pandemics, persistent environmental degradation, and ongoing humanitarian disasters. These challenges underscore the need for well-educated practitioners and scientists who are equipped to apply cutting-edge and impactful methods, from genomics and bioinformatics to community engagement. Our department is committed to understanding and addressing these pressing issues through innovative education, research, and practice.

Our department offers a range of degree programs designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel. They include graduate concentrations within the Master of Public Health (MPH), Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). We also offer several graduate certificates and undergraduate minors. Specialization areas include Environmental & Occupational Health; Genomics; Global Communicable Diseases; and Global Disaster Management, Humanitarian Relief & Homeland Security; Global Health Practice; Health Safety & Environment; Infection Control; Public Health & Clinical Laboratory Practice; and Toxicology. More information on these programs can be found here.

Our faculty and their students are engaged in research and practice across a broad spectrum of topics in global environmental health with expertise in field, laboratory and computational exposure science, toxicology, and risk assessment; disease ecology; infectious disease basic and field science; infection control and disaster management; geographical information systems and prognostic disease modeling; computational genomics and bioinformatics, and community-based scholarship. Further, among our diverse faculty we have those who excel at classroom, practice, and research training of the public health workforce. We are also proud of our strong partnerships with organizations that enhance our research and training capabilities. These include the Moffitt Cancer Center, Tampa General Hospital, Hillsborough County Transportation Planning Organization, Environmental Protection Commission, Department of Health, USF Colleges of Medicine, Engineering, and Arts & Sciences, among many others.

Overall, our department vision is to be a leader in global, environmental, and genomic health sciences, leveraging our diverse expertise to tackle the grand challenges of our time. We aim to foster a collaborative environment where students feel empowered in their scholarly pursuits and public health passions. We believe that by working together, we can inspire and enable the current and next generation of public health scientists and practitioners.

We are excited to have you join us in these important endeavors and look forward to guiding you on your academic and professional journey.

Warm regards,

Amy Stuart, Ph.D.
