Biography
Dr. Stuart is Interim Chair and Professor in the Department of Global, Environmental and Genomic Health Sciences in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida (USF). She also holds collaborative appointments in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Center for Urban Transportation Research at USF. Dr. Stuart’s expertise is in the field of air quality, including computational modeling and measurement of air pollutants in the environment, and assessment of exposures and impacts on populations. Projects have focused on developing community-based distributed air sensor networks, assessing the social distribution of exposures to traffic-related air pollution, understanding impacts of alternative and emerging transportation options on air pollution and population exposures, evaluating the effects of air pollutants on birth outcomes, assessing the fate and impacts of toxic pollutants (including mercury, POPs, pesticides, and PAHs) in natural and built environments, and understanding the fate of volatile chemicals in freezing clouds. She is particularly interested in how we can design human spaces and infrastructure to provide sustainable and equitable access to clean air, natural spaces, and active lifestyles, so that all people can enjoy healthy and rewarding lives. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Transportation, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation (including a CAREER award), among others. Dr. Stuart teaches courses on environmental health, air pollution, computing and numerical methods, and environmental modeling. She is also an active member of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) and the Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA), including current service as the incoming chair of the Awards Committee for AEESP and previously chairing the Student Awards Committee for A&WMA.
