Geriatric Oncology Adherence Link: A Health Program Supporting Older Adults Prescribed Oral Anticancer Medication 

Mission: To provide older adults prescribed oral anticancer medication supportive, evidence-based medication and symptom management guidelines to achieve successful, safe cancer care in the home environment. 

Vision: Our web-based program aims to promote medication adherence, symptom management, and self-efficacy among older adults prescribed oral anticancer medications through trusted information that is evidence-based. We strive to decrease unnecessary healthcare utilization (unplanned oncology visits, urgent or acute care center, emergency room visits, and hospital stays) and quality of life in this population.  

Values: We focus on the health of older adults prescribed oral anticancer medication who have specific needs in relation to aging, comorbidities, polypharmacy, and technology use. Our web-based program uses frameworks that are theoretically driven and rooted in behavior change theory, engagement of technology, and customized considerations for older adults to provide patients with the tools they need to self-manage cancer care in the home environment. Above all else, we strive to improve the health and quality of life among older adults with cancer who are prescribed oral anticancer medication using a sustainable web-based program.

Victoria Marshall

Victoria Marshall, PhD, RN -- Lab Director/ Principal Investigator

Dr. Marshall is an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of South Florida. Her research interests include the supportive self-management of oral anticancer medications and related symptoms among older adults using technology-based interventions. 

Lanie Somon

Lanie Simon, BSN, RN -- Graduate Research Assistant and PhD Student

Lanie was awarded the King O’Neal Scholar Award, Spirit of Nursing Award, and Academic Excellence Award while completing her undergraduate degree at USF. Her current research interests include caregiver burnout among informal caregivers providing care for oncology patients.

Kareem

Kareem Suleiman -- Undergraduate Research Assistant

Kareem is a pre-med Biology B.S. student in the University of South Florida’s College of Arts and Sciences. He is interested in oncology research, focusing on cancer symptoms and how they vary across different treatment approaches.

Thi

Thi Nha Ca Nguyen -- Undergraduate Research Assistant

Thi Nha Ca Nguyen is a Biomedical Sciences student at the University of South Florida and is preparing to apply to the College of Nursing. Her research interests include patient-centered care, health disparities, and the integration of scientific research into clinical practice.

Patrick Chui -- Collaborative Research Assistant

Patrick is a 2025 USF Bull Nurse alumnus and a cellular immunotherapy nurse at Moffitt Cancer Center. As an aspiring nurse researcher, he is interested in developing interventions to increase accessibility of cancer screening, improve oncology health literacy across the lifespan, and manage chemotherapy-induced neurological dysfunction to improve cancer survivorship.

Majed Barazenji -- Undergraduate Research Assistant

 

Majed is a pre-med Biomedical Sciences student at the University of South Florida. He is interested in oncology research, focusing on medication use and symptom management in cancer care.
