Academic Philosophy

"My current focus is investigation of blood-CNS barrier damage in ALS and cellular or non-cellular approaches for barrier repair. My research progress is based on finding the answers to three questions: where, how, and why."

Interdisciplinary and Emerging Signature Programs

  • Biomedical Engineering & Nanomedicine
  • Neurodegenerative Disease
  • Neuroscience

Research Interests

  • My laboratory previously focused on translational research examining the therapeutic effects of transplanting human umbilical cord blood in mouse models of ALS and Sanfilippo Syndrome. Currently, a focus of mine is deciphering the mechanisms of the blood-CNS barrier damage in ALS and engendering barrier repair towards eventual restoration of neurovascular unit functionality in patients with this or other neurovascular diseases. Additionally, we have been exploring effects of extracellular vesicles derived from human bone marrow endothelial progenitor cells as potential cell-free therapeutics for repair of the damaged CNS barrier in ALS. Presently, NIH-supported investigation on ApoA1, the major protein component of HDL, effects on mediating CNS barrier repair in an ALS mouse model is in progress.
