Research Interests
We focus on investigating the molecular mechanism of cardiac dysfunction's progression. We are utilizing electrophysiological, molecular biology, and biochemical approaches, animal models, and biopsy heart tissue samples from patients with heart failure to identify therapeutic targets and approaches and develop therapeutic strategies to improve cardiac function in heart failure. We are currently investigating the remodeling of cardiac contractility, calcium signaling, mitochondrial network, energetics, and metabolism in Friedreich's ataxia heart failure. We are also screening different chemically synthesized and naturally isolated inotropic agents on myocyte contractility, calcium handling, and ion channel biophysics in single cardiomyocytes to discover novel therapeutic agents for potential use in cardiovascular diseases like heart failure and cardiomyopathies.
