Research Interests

  • My laboratory uses in vitro and in vivo models of acute CNS injury to investigate novel cell signaling mechanisms contributing to axonal and neuronal damage in the brain. We use transgenic mice, lentivirus-based approaches, and experimental small-molecule drugs to study potential neuroprotective therapies. Germane to specific targets of interest, we are currently funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) on a project to elucidate the role of the pro-death splicing factor RNA binding motif 5 (RBM5) in traumatic brain injury (TBI). In addition, my laboratory is developing potential strategies to enhance the neuroprotective efficacy of therapeutic hypothermia (TH). Namely, we are investigating methods to optimize the induction of cold-shock proteins (CSPs) and cold-stress hormones (CSHs), to increase the benefits of cerebroprotective cooling.
