Transplant & Hepatology Fellowship Program

Training Curricula

Clinical Training

Fellows will spend six months on the inpatient Hepatology and Liver Transplant services and six months on the outpatient service.

During the inpatient rotation, and under the direct supervision of the rotating hepatologists, the fellow will be responsible for managing post-transplant patients and patients with advanced liver diseaseas well as patients admitted to the transplant surgery floor in anticipation of transplantation or immediately post-transplantation.

The Outpatient clinics will include, general hepatology, liver transplant, transplant evaluation and HCC clinics.

During this rotation, the fellows will have an opportunity to perform endoscopic procedure under the supervision of one of the hepatologist, they will also have the opportunity to perform liver biopsies and Fibroscans.

Training while on the inpatient rotation will take place in Tampa General Hospital and training while on outpatient clinics is at the TGMG office. Both locations are within walking distance and offer facilities and clinical support services required to provide comprehensive care of patients with liver diseases.

Didactic Training

  • Tumor Board/ Hepatobiliary conference: Tuesday 7-8 am, this is a multidisciplinary conference , where cases of patients with hepatobiliary tumors are discussed.
  • Multidisciplinary review board conference (Selection meeting): Tuesday 11:30-1pm, During this conference, cases of patients who completed the transplant evaluation are presented.
  • Pathology Conference : Monthly, first Wednesday of each month 12-1pm. During this conference, liver biopsy and allograft biopsies are discussed. Fellows will learn to interpret biopsy slides and pathology findings of different pre and post transplant conditions.
  • Transplant institute grand round: Monthly, second Wednesday of the month 12-1pm. This is a monthly activity, where inside or outside speakers are invited to speak about a transplant related topic.
  • Transplant Institute Research Conference: Monthly, third Wednesday of the month 12-1pm. Fellow will have the opportunity to present, discuss and have a feedback on their research project.
  • Transplant hepatology quality improvement and Project improvement plan conference: Monthly, Fourth Wednesday of the month 12-1pm. During this conference, morbity and mortality cases are presented and plans for quality improvements are established . Quality improvement and patient safety tools are used to conduct a root cause analysis, and determine the system based issues that affect the outcomes.
  • Radiology review conference: weekly every Friday 12-1pm. During this conference interesting imaging studies of posttransplant and pretransplant patients are reviewed.
  • Hepatology didactics: First Thursday of the month 12-1pm. During this activity, subjects related to acute and chronic liver diseases and liver transplantation will be presented and discussed. Topics to be discussed include but are not limited to viral hepatitis, alcoholic liver disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, acute liver failure, drug-induced liver injury, portal hypertension, nutrition, vascular diseases of the liver, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, Wilson disease, hepatobiliary diseases related to pregnancy, and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, benign and malignant hepatobiliary tumors.
  • Journal Club: Second Thursday of the month 12-1pm. The fellows will be assigned an article to present and discuss during this conference.
  • Clinical case conference: Third Thursday of the month 12-1pm. The fellows will present and discuss a clinical case that they encountered during their inpatient or outpatient rotation.

Evaluation

To ensure the trainee acquires adequate knowledge and develops their technical skills, performance will be monitored carefully during the course of the program training. The trainee will be evaluated formally by the supervising faculty member, quarterly, and will meet with the program director to review these evaluations on a semiannual basis. In addition, you will be given the opportunity to evaluate the faculty, anonymously, on a semiannual basis, to ensure that your educational needs are being met.

Research

Fellows are required to participate in research and publish their project or present it at one of the national meetings.
