PhD Course Registration

This page is intended to serve as a resource for students in the Medical Sciences PhD Program. Information may not be relevant or applicable to students in other programs.

Number of Credits

Unless you have received approval from the PhD Program, you are expected to register for the number of credit hours indicated in the table below. Lab Rotations, Directed Research, and Dissertation Research hours can be adjusted to meet the total credit hour requirement each semester.

Permits

Most courses will require a permit. Use the request form below to request them. Permits may take 48-72 hours to be issued and you will receive an email once they are issued.

Seminars

Students are required to register for Bioscience Seminar every Fall & Spring semester. Students are also required to register for their concentration seminar once per calendar year (generally in the semester you are presenting).

If you register for two seminars in a single semester, a permit is required.

Student Responsibilities

It is your responsibility to:

1) confirm the courses that you intend to register for with your concentration coordinator
2) clear any holds on your account prior to the registration deadline
3) request your permits at least two days before the registration deadline
4) register accurately and on time.

The PhD office is happy to assist with your registration if you have any questions.

How to Register

  1. Log into my.usf.edu using your NetID and password.
  2. Select My Resources > Student Self-Service
  3. Under Registration select Plan & Register
  4. Select Register, Add, or Drop Classes
  5. Enter the CRNs of the courses you intend to take (adjust the number of credit hours for variable-credit courses if needed)
  6. Click Submit
  7. Confirm that all of your registrations were received, and that your total number of credits is accurate

May 18 - First day of classes (Summer A & C)
May 22 - End of drop/add week
May 25 - Memorial Day holiday, no classes
June 19 - Juneteenth holiday, no classes
July 3 - Independence Day holiday, no classes
July 4 - Withdrawal deadline for Summer C
July 24 - Classes end

Fall Important Dates

August 21 - Registration deadline
August 24 - First day of classes
August 28 - end of drop/add week
September 7 - Labor Day holiday, no classes
October 24 - Withdrawal deadline
November 11 - Veteran's Day holiday, no classes
November 26-27 - Thanksgiving holiday, no classes
December 10 - End of term

Summer & Fall 2026 Course Registration

Courses offered for the PhD program are listed on the spreadsheets below. If you are interested in a course not listed here, please check with your concentration coordinator before registering. 

PhD students should enroll in on-ground courses. Courses taken online can only be counted toward program requirements if the course is offered synchronously and is graded (i.e. is not Pass/Fail).

Using the CRNs listed on the spreadsheets and the requirements outlined in the PhD Handbook, request your permits and register for: 

  1. Required core courses 
  2. Required concentration courses
  3. Bioscience Seminar (every Fall & Spring)
  4. Concentration seminar (once per year, generally in the semester you are presenting)
  5. Directed or Dissertation Research (make sure to register for the correct section based on your concentration)
  6. Electives

Satisfactory Academic Progress Reminder

In order to remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and earn a grade of “S” in all S/U courses (including research courses). Students must achieve a “B” or better (B- does not count) in all required courses.
