Residency Program
Overview of Clinical Rotations
Rotation Opportunities
The Family Medicine Residency Program at the University of South Florida/Morton Plant Mease welcomes medical students from AAMC accredited medical schools to complete required (AI) and elective rotations with us. Each year we host students from across the country who wish to gain experience in family medicine and various specialty areas within family medicine. We offer an exceptional student rotation experience at a strong university affiliated, community-based family medicine residency program located on the sunny gulf coast of Florida. Rotating with us is the best way to get to know us and our program well.
Our Residency
The University of South Florida/Morton Plant Mease Family Residency is an eight resident per year program first accredited in 1997. Our faculty includes family physicians, FP OBs, a pharmacologist, and a clinical psychologist. Our outpatient home is the Turley Family Health Center (TFHC), and our hospital is Morton Plant. Our program also hosts a sports medicine fellowship and an ambulatory care pharmacy residency.
Turley Family Health Center (TFHC)
The Turley Family Health Center (TFHC) is our home, a state-of-the-art, community-based outpatient center located in Clearwater, Florida. It is equipped with an electronic medical record integrated with that of our hospital system, computers in each of the 36 exam rooms, a wireless network, seven procedure rooms, spacious waiting rooms, and on-site laboratory and imaging services. Upstairs we have a lecture hall for daily noon conferences, a library, a conference room, and desk/office space for each resident.
We perform approximately 25,000 office visits annually at the TFHC and care for patients of all ages with diverse medical problems. In addition to standard primary care, we offer maternity care, sports medicine consultation, behavioral health consultation, pharmacy consultation, ultrasound, weight management, and multiple procedures including skin procedures, joint injections, and gynecologic procedures.
Morton Plant Hospital
Our two inpatient services operate out of Morton Plant, a 687-bed hospital overlooking the harbor in downtown Clearwater. One service is a traditional medicine service with group rounds conducted by a pulmonology/critical care attending. The patients are pooled from local primary care physicians who choose to use us as their hospitalists. The second service is made up of one senior resident and one family medicine attending, and the patients are our continuity patients from the TFHC. This is a more family medicine-focused service, which encourages one-on-one learning opportunities among faculty members, residents and medical students.
