In their Own Words:
“I grew up in a rural town southeast of Buffalo, New York that is known for having more cows than people. There were no large health systems around and I only saw a physician for my yearly sports physical in order to play basketball and softball. It wasn’t until my father succumbed to cancer during my junior year of high school that the influence healthcare providers could have on a patient, family, and a community came to my attention. It was then that I thought about a future for myself in healthcare. After much discussion with my high school chemistry teacher, I decided to take my skills in chemistry, math, and biology along with my passion for helping others into the field of pharmacy. It was my community and my family that stood beside me during the loss of my father that were also there through the demanding years of pharmacy school.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from my time in pharmacy school since I was the first person in my family to pursue a doctorate. It wasn’t until I participated in outreach events with Belmont University in Nashville that I realized educating the community was a passion of mine. I took that same energy to the NSU College of Pharmacy and the south Florida community where I participated in numerous health fairs and outreach events. These events drove me to search for a path in pharmacy that would let me use my strengths in communication and problem solving to better the health of others. It was during a school clinical rotation that I discovered the non-traditional role of an ambulatory care pharmacist and immediately fell in love with it. The opportunity to help manage patient care with a diverse team of exceptional health professionals at the Turley Family Heath Center is a dream come true.”
About Dr. Miller: Miss Ashley Miller began her path in pharmacy determined to make her family and hometown proud. She immediately got involved at the NSU College of Pharmacy in community outreach events, peer mentoring, and presiding over the Beta Lambda chapter of Phi Delta Chi, a professional pharmacy fraternity. She created the first FitSpeed Health Fest in South Florida which partnered with a local fitness center to provide free workout classes, blood glucose, blood pressure, and bone density screenings. She also brought in NSU’s athletic training program and local businesses to provide supplemental education to the patrons. Additionally, she was inducted into the Rho Chi Academic Honor Society for Pharmacy. She was a poster finalist at the 2018 Florida Society of Health-system Pharmacists annual meeting, acknowledging her and her colleagues’ invention of a medication reconciliation online training program for all healthcare professionals.
She is an avid sports fan who looks forward to attending the Tampa Bay Lightning games every year. She relaxes by paddle boarding on the Gulf, working out, and trying new restaurants. She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and golden retriever, Maya. She is passionate about educating patients about their medications and teaching students and associates new topics. She is looking forward to furthering her education as this year’s Pharmacy Resident.
