Interventional Cardiology

At USF Health, our interventional cardiologists use catheter based procedures to both diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, including congenital and structural heart conditions. These minimally invasive procedures provide patients with positive health outcomes, as well as quicker recovery times.

In the case of a coronary artery disease, where-in arteries supplying blood to the heart become obstructed by cholesterol-based plaque, an interventional cardiologist may perform an angiogram to gain additional understanding regarding blockage characteristics, how heart muscle function may be effected, and determine the best patient care option -  including medications, stents or more extensive surgery.

USF Interventionalists perform procedures in the Tampa General Hospital Cardiovascular Center and are equipped with the full array of advanced catheter-based tools for vascular intervention. These include:

  • Intravascular Imaging with both IVUS and OCT
  • Hemodynamic flow assessment using FFR
  • Calcium debulking techniques such as rotational and orbital atherectomy
  • Complete tool kit for intervention on complex chronic total occlusion lesions
  • Aspiration thrombectomy
  • Distal embolic protection for vein graft stenosisIntra-aortic balloon pump support
  • Impella mechanical circulatory support
  • Device based vascular closure.
