Originally from Panama, Dr. Arlene Calvo returned to her native country in 2002 after culminating her studies at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health. She helped establish the USF Panama Program at the City of Knowledge. Dr. Calvo is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health, assigned to the Panama Program in Panama. Dr. Calvo holds a doctorate degree in public health from USF COPH. Dr. Calvo has since championed the training and growth of science, academia, and research in the region. She has taught numerous local and international courses for local participants, and international experiences for international students. She has conducted large scale multicenter population-based research studies on vaccine acceptability, new vaccine trials and cancer control, women’s health issues, among others. Her interests include community participatory processes, chronic disease prevention, health education, nutrition, and others.
