Acute Care Surgery
Overview
Message from the Division Chief
The Division of Acute Care Surgery at the University of South Florida provides comprehensive, around-the-clock care in trauma, emergency general surgery (EGS), and surgical critical care. Anchored at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida, our division plays a central role in providing lifesaving surgical interventions in the region’s most critical and complex cases. TGH has been recognized as one of the Nation’s Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report and is ranked as the #1 hospital in Tampa Bay. It continues to serve as a premier destination for excellence in patient care, clinical innovation, and surgical education.
We are proud to lead Florida’s first American College of Surgeons (ACS) Level I-verified trauma program for both adults and children. Our division operates a dedicated Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) and Surgical Step-Down Unit (SSDU), enabling the highest standard of care for trauma and emergency surgical patients, as well as supporting other complex surgical services.
Our faculty are not only master clinicians but also committed educators and researchers. We actively train over 40 surgery residents, 4 trauma surgery fellows, and numerous USF medical students—ensuring the next generation of acute care surgeons is prepared for the evolving demands of our field. It is an honor to lead such a dedicated and skilled team.

Clinical Integration
-
The Wallace Trauma Center at Tampa General Hospital (TGH) serves as the region’s premier destination for advanced trauma care, proudly standing as the only Level I Trauma Center in West Central Florida. TGH holds the distinction of being the first hospital in the state to achieve Level I trauma verification from the American College of Surgeons for both adult and pediatric care—an acknowledgment of its comprehensive, around-the-clock readiness to handle the most complex and critical injuries.
In addition, TGH has been designated a Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center of Excellence by the Florida Department of Health. This recognition highlights its leading role in delivering highly specialized care for patients with serious neurological injuries, supported by state-of-the-art treatments and rehabilitation resources.
Through its unwavering focus on clinical excellence, innovation, and education, the Wallace Trauma Center continues to set the gold standard in trauma services across Florida.
-
The Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service is a highly active and essential component of surgical care at Tampa General Hospital, managing a wide range of common surgical emergencies such as appendicitis, gallbladder disease, bowel obstructions, and soft tissue infections. In addition, the service responds to complex surgical catastrophes and functions as the hospital’s dedicated surgical rescue team, delivering urgent, lifesaving interventions 24/7. Notably, TGH is the first hospital in Florida to be verified by the American College of Surgeons for Emergency General Surgery, underscoring its commitment to the highest national standards in emergency surgical care.
-
The Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) is a 27-bed unit, paired with a 9-bed Surgical Step-Down Unit (SSDU), that delivers specialized critical care for trauma and Emergency General Surgery (EGS) patients. In addition to trauma and EGS cases, the STICU also admits patients from a wide range of surgical services for post-surgical resuscitation, sepsis management, or support for organ dysfunction. These services include Transplant, Surgical Oncology, Colorectal, Upper GI Surgery, Vascular Surgery, OB/GYN and GYN Oncology, ENT/Head & Neck, Urology, Orthopedics, and Plastic Surgery. The STICU at Tampa General Hospital was the first in Florida to earn a national Beacon Award for Excellence, underscoring its role as a leader in high-acuity, multidisciplinary surgical care.
Research, Training, and Education Highlights
Mission Zero
“Mission Zero” is a program sponsored by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response that provides administrative funding to ensure medical readiness by integrating military care providers into civilian trauma centers. These providers often have experience in austere and combat settings that can be shared with their civilian counterparts and applied to the unique medical challenges found in natural disasters and mass casualties as well as penetrating and blunt force trauma.
Two active-duty Air Force trauma surgeons are credentialed and on the medical staff at TGH. They are fully integrated members of the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery as attending trauma surgeons. Additionally, they will receive academic appointments at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and serve as educators to over 40 surgery residents and 4 trauma surgery fellows.
Education & Training
Our division sustains a vibrant academic mission:
- Educating over 40 general surgery residents
- Training 4 surgical critical care fellows
- Teaching medical students in core clerkships and acting internships
- Leading hands-on experiences in the Surgical Trauma ICU and SSDU, where trainees gain exposure to real-time decision-making in complex trauma, general surgery, and critical care scenarios
With its commitment to clinical excellence, research, and education, the Division of Acute Care Surgery continues to stand at the forefront of lifesaving care in our region.
