Message from the Division Chief

Welcome to the Division of Surgical Oncology. Our division is dedicated to advancing the surgical care of cancer patients in the Tampa Bay region and beyond. We practice a broad scope of complex general surgical oncology across disease sites including hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers, extremity and retroperitoneal sarcoma, gastrointestinal malignancies including GI stromal tumors, adrenal and neuroendocrine tumors, and cutaneous oncology. Our surgeons lead tumor boards in each of these disease sites to guide the multidisciplinary management of cancer patients.

With regards to operative volume, we lead the region in hepatobiliary and pancreatic operations. We offer robotic, laparoscopic, and open operations, oftentimes in collaboration with our interventional radiology and gastrointestinal endoscopy colleagues. We routinely perform advanced operations including pancreatic resections with vascular reconstruction, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, and hepatic artery infusion pump procedures.

In partnership with the TGH Cancer Institute, our surgeons actively practice basic, translational, and clinical research in cancer and surgical biology. Areas of interest are the biology of regional therapy for peritoneal surface malignancies, liver regeneration, and the impact of the gut microbiome on cancer biology. We are actively enrolling in multiple clinical trials and have multiple grants funding our basic/translational program. We welcome industry partnerships that help advance the care of our patients. Our residents are actively engaged in research and in testament to the experience they have on our service, regularly match into surgical oncology fellowships after residency training.

Disease Sites Treated

  • We offer advanced open and minimally invasive pancreatic resections including arterial and venous vascular reconstruction. Working closely with our gastroenterology, radiology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology teams we provide innovative treatment sequencing and aggressive surgical management of pancreas cancers. Drs. Nywening and Karachristos focus on this disease site.

  • Dr. Karachristos brings decades of expertise to the hepatobiliary disease site. We offer open and minimally invasive liver resections and vascular reconstruction. We work in close contact with our Department’s leading solid organ transplant team to arrange listing for liver transplants when needed. We offer cutting edge regional therapies such as hepatic artery infusion pumps. Drs. Nywening and Karachristos focus on this disease site.

  • We treat a range of peritoneal surface malignancies including colorectal, appendiceal, gastric and mesothelioma tumor types. We offer advanced regional therapies such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The biology of these tumors is an area of focused basic and translational research for our group. Drs. Nywening and Jacobson see patients with these types of tumors.

  • We work in close collaboration with our medical oncology colleagues for the care of patients with neuroendocrine tumors, ensuring that our patients get the optimal treatment sequence and disease monitoring in the long term. All such cases are discussed at our robust gastrointestinal tumor board. All our surgeons see patients with these types of tumors.

  • Sarcoma care requires coordination between general and orthopedic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists. We offer innovative multimodality treatment for both retroperitoneal and extremity sarcomas and have extensive experience with brachytherapy radiation techniques. Drs. Nywening and Jacobson focus on this disease site and Dr. Nywening is the surgical lead of our sarcoma tumor board.

  • We treat all types of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. We have the backing of a multidisciplinary cutaneous oncology tumor board. We are particularly experienced with skin cancers that arise in organ transplant patients related to immunosuppressive medications. Dr. Jacobson sees our cutaneous oncology patients and leads a basic/translational research program in this field.
