Transplant Surgery
Division Overview
The Division of Transplant Surgery at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, in strategic partnership with Tampa General Hospital (TGH), anchors the largest academic medical system collaboration in the region. Our mission is to redefine transplant care by combining nationally ranked surgical expertise with academic research, education, and policy leadership. This division delivers comprehensive abdominal organ transplant services and is consistently recognized for tremendous volume, innovation, patient outcomes, and equitable access.
Message from Dr. Kiran Dhanireddy
Transplantation has been a cornerstone of the care provided to our community by TGH and USF since 1974. With a deep tradition of innovation, scholarship, and clinical excellence, we have grown into the largest transplant center in the country in 2024. Our large clinical volume has become a platform for new knowledge creation and a training environment for the next generation of surgeons. Collectively, we are committed to equitable access for patients through the development of multidisciplinary teams of experts. The future of transplantation is being pioneered right here in Tampa!
Kiran Dhanireddy, MD, FACS
Mission of the Division
To lead the nation in academic transplant innovation, outcomes, and education by creating an environment where surgical excellence, research, and health policy intersect to advance the future of transplantation.
About the Division
The Division of Transplant Surgery consists of multidisciplinary faculty who serve as academic leaders within the USF Department of Surgery and core members of the TGH Transplant Institute. The division is structured around integrated teams of transplant surgeons, APPs, pharmacists, and coordinators. Surgeries are performed exclusively at Tampa General Hospital, one of the highest-volume transplant centers in the country. Faculty contribute actively to medical education, health equity, and continuous innovation.
Key Research Highlights
TGH and USF are national leaders in organ preservation and perfusion science. In 2024, 79% of transplanted organs at Tampa General Hospital utilized advanced perfusion or preservation technologies. Our transplant research team was recently awarded an NIH R01 grant to explore normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) and bioelectrical modulation to improve organ viability for transplantation. This work could dramatically extend organ viability and reverse ischemic injury. This award underscores Tampa General’s leadership in translational transplant research and the integration of engineering and surgical innovation to expand the donor organ pool.
Fellowship Information
The Division of Transplant Surgery participates in the ASTS-certified Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship hosted by Tampa General Hospital. This rigorous two-year program offers comprehensive training in liver, kidney, and pancreas transplantation, as well as exposure to living donor nephrectomy (including laparoscopic and robotic techniques) and emerging technologies like normothermic liver perfusion. Fellows train alongside USF Health Department of Surgery faculty and receive progressive operative independence while actively engaging in multidisciplinary care, clinical research, and national transplant conferences. The program is designed to prepare future leaders in academic transplant surgery and supports scholarly activity throughout the fellowship experience.
