Message from the Director

Welcome to the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Division of Colorectal Surgery—where innovation, education, and compassionate care converge. Our division is proud to be a nationally recognized leader in the diagnosis and surgical management of disorders affecting the intestines, colon, rectum, and anus. From routine conditions to the most complex diseases—including colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease—our team is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care using the most advanced surgical techniques available.

As part of the Department of Surgery, we are entrusted with the education of medical students, general surgery residents, and colon and rectal surgery fellows. Our ACGME-accredited Colorectal Surgery Fellowship offers two annual positions and provides extensive hands-on experience through rotations at Tampa General Hospital and the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital. We also welcome fourth-year medical students and visiting learners from across the country and internationally for clinical electives and research mentorship.

Our division is home to one of the busiest colorectal surgery programs in Florida and maintains the highest volume of colorectal cancer surgeries in the region. We are leaders in advanced minimally invasive surgery, including robotic, laparoscopic, and transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)—the latter often allowing for incisionless tumor removal and same-day discharge. We consistently rank among the top programs nationally for safety outcomes.

In addition to our clinical and educational missions, we are deeply engaged in research. Our surgeons participate in IRB-approved studies and clinical trials, investigating next-generation surgical technologies and presenting their findings at national meetings.

Whether you're a patient seeking expert care, a trainee exploring the field, or a collaborator in academic surgery, we welcome you to explore all that the Division of Colorectal Surgery has to offer.

About our Division

he Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at USF Health is a nationally respected leader in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical management of disorders affecting the intestines, colon, rectum, and anus. Our expert team of board-certified colorectal surgeons offers a full spectrum of care—from common conditions like hemorrhoids to complex diseases such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.

As one of the busiest colorectal programs in Florida, we are proud to lead West-Central Florida in adopting advanced and innovative surgical approaches that reduce recovery time and enhance patient outcomes. Our division was the first in the region to implement laparoscopic and robotic colorectal surgery, and among the first to offer transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS)—a technique that allows for incisionless tumor removal, often with same-day discharge.

We consistently rank among the top programs nationally for safety outcome measures, and we maintain the highest volume of colorectal cancer surgeries in the region. Our surgeons specialize in sphincter-sparing and organ-preserving techniques, helping many patients avoid colostomy when clinically appropriate.

Our division also plays a vital role in education and training. In addition to hosting an ACGME-accredited fellowship with two annual positions, we provide rotations for fourth-year medical students and residents from USF and other national and international institutions.

Commitment to Research and Innovation

At USF Health, we are deeply committed to advancing the field of colorectal surgery through ethical clinical research. Our division actively participates in IRB-approved studies and clinical trials exploring next-generation robotic systems, endoscopic techniques, and novel cancer treatments.

Our research priorities include:

  • Innovations in minimally invasive surgery
  • Optimization of surgical techniques to reduce post-operative complications
  • Development of advanced therapies for rectal cancer and anorectal disorders

A dedicated full-time research staff supports our growing portfolio of studies, ensuring regulatory compliance and maintaining the highest standards of care for trial participants.

USF Health colorectal surgeons routinely publish in leading journals and present at major national meetings, shaping the future of colorectal surgery on a national scale. Our team’s scholarly contributions ensure that we remain on the forefront of clinical practice and scientific advancement.
