Salud Latina

Student Mentoring and Engagement

Student Experiences

Through the Salud Latina USF initiative, we have been able to offer support and practical experience in public health to our students. Here are some of our student experiences:

Romina Beltran-Anaya, Master's student

“Being an online student from out of state can pose challenges to connecting with the USF COPH community. However, Salud Latina USF has given me the platform to connect with my peers and faculty and engage in topics that are important to me both as a public health professional and a member of the community. I believe in Salud Latina USF's vision to bring public health education to the masses using social media platforms while addressing health disparities in the Spanish-speaking community. I look forward to continuing to be a part of it.”

Tailyn Osorio, Doctoral student

“As an Anthropology major, I have learned a lot about how public health intersects with my studies. Not only have I been able to apply my experiences in Salud Latina to my studies, but I have also gained increased awareness and understanding of the impact of public health on populations. Salud Latina has facilitated connections with Latin American and Caribbean peers and faculty with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds that are important in population-centered public health research.”

Lashae Rolle, Master's student

“I have had an amazing experience with the Salud Latina Initiative. The initiative has led to my educational success while working on my IFE academic projects. I have also gained knowledge and awareness of Latino populations. I was even able to work among peers and meet students from other health colleges while working on this project. My goal is to continue working with the Salud Latina Initiative and bring awareness to the Latin American & Caribbean region.”

Michelle Baviera, Master's student

“Interning for Salud Latina for my IFE experience gave me an amazing opportunity to work closely with faculty and peers, and it made me aware of the misinformation being spread on social media surrounding prevention and treatment methods. It also opened my eyes to the health outcomes faced by populations globally.”

Erik Ruiz, Doctoral student

“It has been such an honor to work with the USF COPH faculty in the Salud Latina Initiative because not only have I been able to engage in work relevant to my own research interests but I have also been able to learn from experienced academicians who are truly committed to improving the health and wellbeing of communities.”

Rolando Trejos, Doctoral student

“As a Latinx doctoral student, Salud Latina represented an opportunity to tackle the needs and realities of my community within the United States and abroad through a collaborative and inclusive effort. Some of the unique opportunities I obtained through this initiative include a social media analysis on COVID-19 misinformation, collaborating as a founding member of the American Public Health Association Student Latino Caucus for Public Health, Student Chapter at USF, engaging as a participant in events to disseminate evidence-based information and obtain mentorship and guidance from nationally recognized public health researchers. Thank you USF Salud Latina!”
