Biography
Before coming to USF 18 years ago, Dr Van Elswyk was a
partner in a six-person medical group for the practice of obstetrics and
gynecology in northern New Jersey. After 20 years, he retired to Florida and
began to practice his passion of teaching here at the college.
He is the primary teacher of the course Survey of
Human Disease. He enjoys teaching and believes his course is incredibly
important for the student because it discusses so many significant topics that
touch the lives of every student, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, cancer,
diabetes, and heart disease. He also is
the instructor for Medical Terminology and the supervisor for Sex, Health and
Decision Making. He uses Twitter to tweet current
medical articles that are related to his lectures and class discussion and
currently has over 2700 followers. He was voted the Golden Key award by the
USF student body in the beginning years of his teaching at USF.
He also enjoys being physically active with his two
sons who are nationally ranked triathletes and he is also the sponsor for the
USF triathlon club. He and his wife are avid photographers and enjoy sharing
their love of photography, traveling and spending time with their Rhodesian
Ridgeback, Rhett.
