Research Interests

  • Our research focuses on heparan sulfate (HS), a linear polysaccharide, that expresses at the cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix where it interacts with a large number of protein ligands, such as growth factors, morphogens, cytokines and matrix proteins, to modulate a variety of physiological and pathological processes. In general, HS interacts with the protein ligands through unique binding sites, which consist of relatively small tracts of variable modifications (sulfation of glucosamine and uronic acid residues and epimerization of glucuronic acid to iuronic acid) in specific arrangement. We are interested to delineate the functions and related structures of HS in leukocyte trafficking/inflammation, vascular development, stem cell biology, cancer and Alzheimer`s disease, and to elucidate the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms. Our ultimate goal is to apply our gained novel knowledge to develop effective therapeutics for related human diseases.
