Biography

Dr. Dishaw is a Professor in the Morsani College of Medicine. His research leverages non-traditional animal models (such as invertebrate chordates) to study the gut as an interface with the environment, to characterize novel forms of innate immunity, and to define how exogenous signals influence immune maturation across mucosal surfaces. The Dishaw lab investigates how host immunity and exogenous factors (like xenobiotics, pathobionts, or even viruses that infect bacteria, or bacteriophages) of the gut ecosystem influence the microbiome and host health. His work explores how these exposures influence animal (& immune) development, with a particular focus on prematurity in infants.
