Biography

Dr. Dishaw is an associate professor in the Morsani College of Medicine. His main research, using non-traditional animal models, focuses on characterizing novel forms of innate immunity and the molecular phylogeny of immune responses in the gut. His long-term objectives utilize genomics and transcriptomics approaches, as well as experimental biology, to study host-microbiome interactions. The Dishaw lab aims to define conserved phylogenic signals shaping the stability of microbial community dynamics at mucosal surfaces by investigating how host immunity and exogenous factors (like viruses that infect bacteria, or phages) of the gut ecosystem shape the microbiome. He works to reveal how this dynamic relationship at the mucosal surface of the gut relates to chronic health conditions such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
