USF Diabetes Center

The USF Diabetes Center became the administrative home for Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology Services at USF Health in July 2012. Dr. Henry Rodriguez serves as Clinical Director of the USF Diabetes Center at the Frank and Carol Morsani Center on the USF campus. The Diabetes Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide the latest in technology and resources for patient care, diabetes education, and clinical research. Drs. Rodriguez, Dorothy Shulman, Sureka Bollepalli, Verena Jorgensen, Grace Dougan, and Danielle Gomez see children and adolescents with diabetes at this facility.

Multidisciplinary team members include diabetes educators, a dietician, clinical social worker, and a licensed psychologist with expertise in addressing the challenges faced by diabetes patients and their families. Individual and group education covering basic and advanced diabetes management, insulin pump therapy and center continuous glucose monitoring is available.

Clinical research opportunities currently include

  • Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet and the Type 1 Diabetes Exchange studies that are investigating new therapies in pediatric Type 2 diabetes.
  • An intervention study to preserve beta-cell function in newly-diagnosed type 1 patients.
  • A study assessing residual C-peptide in patients with longstanding Type 1 diabetes.

Please call 813-396-2580, option 8, if you are interested in participating in any of these studies.

Our physicians care for children and adolescents with disorders of growth, thyroid, puberty, pituitary, adrenal, calcium metabolism, bone, ovaries and testes. USF serves as the regional Newborn Screening Center for congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
