Program Overview

The Clinical Neurophysiology (CNP) Fellowship is a one year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Please note that the CNP Fellowship at the University of South Florida does not offer specialization tracks for either EMG or EEG. Fellows will receive extensive training in both EMG and EEG, as knowledge in both areas are needed for the CNP Certification examination. We strongly believe that this approach will prepare fellows with the expertise necessary to provide excellent patient care and excell in their future endeavors.

Rotations, Educational Programs, and Scholarly Activities

Rotations serve as a means for obtaining broad exposure to clinical neurophysiology with training concurrently in EMG, EEG and evoked potentials. Fellows will be assigned rotations at our four training sites: The Morsani Center, South Tampa Center, James A. Haley VA Hospital, and Tampa General Hospital. During their rotation, fellows will be under direct, immediately available supervision of a specialty trained and board certified attending. Attendings are also available by phone whenever the fellows need to discuss a case. At minimum, fellows are expected to be in clinic for the entirety of their assigned shift. Fellows must also be avaliable for long term observations when and if required.

Per ACGME guidelines, fellows are assigned to a continuity of care clinic. These clinic assignments take place at one of three USF clinics: South Tampa Center, the Carol and Frank Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare, and the Health Park Clinic (30th Street Clinic).

Fellows are expected to actively participate in weekly Neurophysiology and/or Epilepsy conferences, lectures, and Grand Rounds. Fellows are encouraged to take up elective courses and attend conferences based on their educational experiences as a supplement to their manditory course work and training.

As a means of establishing and maintaining an environment of inquiry and scholarship, an active research component must be included in our program and must be satisfied in order for fellows to successfully complete their fellowship. Fellows can meet this requirement one of three ways: Submit at least 1 abstract to peer reviewed journals or national or regional medical meetings; Give a formal research presentation at a national or regional medical meeting; Or publish an original article, book chapter, or review article.

Faculty Mentor Program

In an effort to foster personal growth and professional development, USF CNP Fellowship offers a Faculty Mentor Program. Each fellow will select one faculty member as their mentor for the duration of the fellowship. Mentors will serve as a supportive counselor in times of needed assistance. Fellows may be mentored by the Fellowship Director until their first review period, at which time they may select a mentor.

Evaluations

Fellows will be evaluated after every three (3) months by their supervising Attending, per ACGME guidelines. Attending evaluations are based upon the Core Competency Evaluation system. Additionally, the Fellowship Director will meet with each fellow for progress reviews in the middle and at the end of the academic year. Fellows will have access to these evaluations via (whatever the online system is). Upon completion of the residency, the graduating fellows will have an exit interview with the Program Director and be provided the opportunity to anonymously evaluate the Attendings and the program.
