Biography

Dr. Arlene Calvo is a researcher and professor in the Department of Family and Community Health at the University of South Florida (USF) College of Public Health. She is assigned to USF's Panama program at the City of Knowledge since 2004. Dr. Calvo is the current lead of the Public Health Practice program and the Salud Latina USF initiative at the College of Public Health. Dr. Calvo is also an affiliate researcher at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies. Dr. Calvo holds a PhD and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from USF. Her area of focus includes women's health issues, including cancer, vaccines, domestic violence, and some sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV. In the area of vaccines, she has worked on multiple vaccine clinical, epidemiological, and observational studies including rotavirus and papillomavirus vaccines. She is director of the international conference of Vaccinology in the Tropics and the Migration and Health forum. Dr. Calvo is currently a member of the steering committee for the implementation of the acellular polio vaccine in Panama, the Scientific Advisory Board of the City of Knowledge in Panama, and the Gorgas Memorial Institute's Bioethics Committee.
