Biography

Dr. Alison Oberne is an Instructor III at the College of Public Health. She focuses on teaching, research, and service at the University of South Florida. She teaches a variety of courses for the Bachelors of Science in Public Health degree, including Research and Evaluation in Public Health, Critical Issues in Public Health, and Overview of Programs and Policies in Public Health. She also co-teaches the Public Health Live on Tour Seminar in which students visit public health agencies through community engagement. Sites visited in past semesters include: Tampa Bay Water, Waste-to-Energy facility, Hillsborough County Health Department, Lutheran Services Florida, and Metropolitan Ministries. She is dedicated to skill building among her students so they can excel post-graduation. She also presents at teaching conferences to promote pedagogical practices nationally. Dr. Oberne’s research interests are in health literacy and dietary practices among college students. She is most interested in learning what factors influence dietary practices among college students in an effort to support health promoting behaviors and prevent subsequent disease. She is also interested in health literacy and its role in health behaviors among young adults. Finally, she is interested in food insecurity among young adults and mechanisms to increase food access among this hidden population. Currently, Dr. Oberne serves as a Faculty Senator representing the College of Public Health at the university-level. She also serves as the primary member on the College of Public Health’s Education Committee. She is dedicated to serving the university community through the Global Citizens Project and other university programs. She volunteers in her community with the Girls on the Run program, an international positive youth development program, and the Team Tampa Bay Missions program, a nonprofit medical mission group.
