In His Own Words: “As a Champa Bay fan, I have always known that no matter where my career took me, I wanted to find my way back to Tampa Bay. Fortunately, the University of South Florida offered a comprehensive curriculum that supports both my academic goals and my passion for sports medicine. I am committed to deepening my understanding of musculoskeletal health, lifestyle medicine, and preventative care—so I can better serve my community.”
About Dr. Mikhail: He was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and is excited to return home to serve the community that shaped him. Growing up, he played soccer, basketball and football. As the eldest of three, he had to keep up his skills to keep his younger brothers humble. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida before completing his medical degree at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It was during medical school that Dr. Mikhail developed a strong appreciation for primary and preventative care, which led him to pursue a Family Medicine residency through Florida State University, where he served as chief resident. During his time there, he not only learned how to play pickleball, but also deepened his interest in sports-related and non-operative orthopedic injuries.
Michael Sweda, MD
Hometown: Jacksonville, FL
Undergraduate Education: Bachelor of Science, University of Central Florida/University of North Florida, Jacksonville, FL
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine
In His Own Words: When I was applying for Sports Medicine Fellowship, I was striving to find a program that had a strong and broad team coverage along with a good Ultrasound learning curriculum. I also was looking for a team that would support my future goals. As I completed my rotation with the Sports Medicine fellowship at USF Morsani, I knew that this program was a perfect fit for me and I knew this was the place where I would continue to strive to become a great physician at an even better program.
About Dr. Sweda: Dr. Sweda was raised in Jacksonville, FL. He played soccer competitively throughout high school as his dream was to play at the professional level which was hindered by multiple injuries. From then on, he was driven to pursue medicine with the goal of becoming a sports medicine physician as he wanted to help those athletes which present for injuries return to full capacity to their sport. This goal was furthered through completing medical school at Ross University and family medicine residency at HCA Florida Orange Park Hospital. There he completed many sidelining opportunities with multiple teams. His interests include spending time with family and friends, playing soccer or other sports, go to the beach, and explore different areas.
