Medical Student Selection Committee

Committee Charge:

The charge of the Medical Student Selection Committee (MSSC) is to review all applications to the MD program and determine a list of candidates and alternate candidates for admission. The final authority to accept MD program applicants rests with the MSSC. The committee will also determine procedures by which applicants are screened, interviewed, and selected.

The voting members of the MSSC will be composed of nine clinical faculty, seven basic science faculty, and four faculty from the USF-Lehigh Valley campus to be nominated by the Faculty Council. The MSSC will also include up to three additional faculty members-at-large to be appointed by the Vice Dean for Educational Affairs and are appointed for three-year overlapping terms. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs will be a non-voting, ex-officio member. The MSSC is chaired by the Assistant Dean for MD Admissions, who is a non-voting member.

The MSSC will be supported by the MSSC SELECT subcommittee. The role of the MSSC SELECT subcommittee is to assist the MSSC by providing an initial evaluation of SELECT MD program candidates who have been chosen for interview. The MSSC SELECT subcommittee will make recommendations to the MSSC committee regarding each applicant. These recommendations are passed on to the MSSC committee for consideration and final vote.

The MSSC SELECT subcommittee will be composed of members of the MSSC and are designated by the vice dean for educational affairs and the MSSC chair. Three faculty members will be from the USF Tampa campus and three faculty members will be from the USF Lehigh Valley campus. The chair of the MSSC SELECT subcommittee will be chosen by the MSSC chair annually.

The MSSC SELECT subcommittee ordinarily meets once each month throughout the admissions cycle.  A quorum is defined as four voting members.
