Research Interests

  • Dr. Kelly possesses expertise in pharmacoepidemiology, medication safety, evidenced-based medicine, and pharmacy practice. He has over thirty-five years of experience in many different health care settings. Prior to his appointment at USF, Dr. Kelly was Chairman of Pharmacy Practice and a tenured and full professor at the School of Pharmacy at Mercer University. He was also a Guest Researcher at the Immunization Safety Branch of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both in Atlanta. Prior to this, he was Assistant Vice President and Director of Pharmacy at Hamot Medical Center, a 550-bed facility located in Erie, PA. He is also a past board member of thye American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
  • He earned a BS degree in pharmacy from Ferris State University, a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree and residency certificate in clinical pharmacy from the University of Michigan, and completed a fellowship in Executive Management at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He also completed graduate work in pharmacoepidemiology and biostatistics at McGill and Emory Universities, and is a fellow of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology.
  • Dr. Kelly has published over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts, 10 chapters in books, and has presented his work nationally and internationally. He is the author of “Pharmacy: What It Is and How It Works” (CRC Press, 2002, 2007, 2011) Book, and “Prescribed Medications and the Public Health: Laying the Foundation for Risk Reduction”(Haworth Press, 2007). His third book is titled “The Good Pharmacist – Characteristics Virtues, and Habits (WN Kelly Consulting & Publishing, Inc., 2011). Dr. Kelly is a patent holder and co-inventor of clinical decision support software that monitors and alerts prescribers of potential safety problems with prescribed medication. He also leads medical teams to Nicaragua each year.
