General Psychiatry Residency
Specialized Training
Research
Research is an important part of our mission at the University of South Florida Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. There are numerous opportunities for residents to participate in ongoing projects through the University of South Florida Institute for Research in Psychiatry or a project of their own.
Residents are encouraged to participate in research, but it is not a requirement for graduation. Many of our residents teach conferences to junior residents, present at Grand Rounds, publish manuscripts and present posters at local, regional or national conferences. For residents with a specific research interest, faculty mentorship is available to help residents learn how to apply for grants. A research track can be developed on a case by case basis.
TMS and ECT
Residents in our program have the opportunity to become certified in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and they also get extensive training in Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). A three month longitudinal clinical elective during the PGY-3 year offers Neurostar© training for TMS as well as hands-on clinical experience. During the PGY-4 year, residents complete a two-month long rotation leading an interdisciplinary team that provides ECT treatments.
