Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine

We are the largest department within the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM), encompassing over 24 divisions, programs, and centers.  As part of the University of South Florida, an esteemed member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and a preeminent research-intensive state university, we are honored to call this institution home.  In close partnership with our primary teaching hospital, Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the MCOM forms the region's only full-service, integrated academic medical center.  We are a vital healthcare safety net, a hub of economic opportunity, and innovation that demonstrates the power of academic medicine to Tampa Bay and, increasingly, the entire State of Florida.

Representing over half the faculty and providers in the College of Medicine, our department plays a vital role in this thriving healthcare ecosystem.  While our size and breadth of offerings are impressive, our greatest pride lies in our amazing people: our faculty, providers, staff, and trainees who "Make Life Better" for patients and families every day.  We are one team united in our purpose to positively impact our community and contribute to excellence in our three primary mission areas:

Clinical

Our faculty and providers are recognized as master clinicians, consistently rising to meet the most challenging diagnostic and therapeutic demands in both our hospital and ambulatory clinics.  We are increasingly organized around specialized disease centers of excellence, where patients and families turn to us for unmatched expertise in healing rare and complex diseases.  Our dedicated team frequently earns awards for quality of care, clinical excellence, and exceptional patient experience.   We believe greatness is in the agency of helping others, and it is a privilege to grow to serve the needs of our community.

Education

We are committed to nurturing excellence in education and empowering our trainees with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the future.  In doing so, we affirm our institutional commitment to training the next generation of leaders in academic medicine, and giving our trainees a sense of meaning, purpose, and belonging.  Our university-based faculty have a storied history of winning teaching awards, and we set the standard within MCOM, our primary teaching hospital, TGH, and our other affiliate hospitals, Moffitt Cancer Center and the James A. Haley VA.

Research and Scholarship

With an annual budget of $130 million, including over $78 million in NIH-funded research funding and $14 million in clinical research studies, our department is committed to advancing scientific discovery and innovation.  Our collaboration with the TGH clinical institutes and service lines around clinical trials and innovation places us at the forefront of biomedical science.  The discoveries we help to pioneer will transform medicine and the lives of our patients, and we will share these discoveries with the world through our commitment to scholarship and disseminating knowledge.

In closing, I want to emphasize that our department is a community of thoughtful and caring academic professionals who espouse an ethos rigorously rooted in our values.  These values - integrity, compassion, accountability, excellence, courage, and the right to belong - are aligned with our academic health system and will guide our collective future.  If you are excited about what you have read here, we invite you to explore more through these pages and consider joining us on our journey.
