1. Provide an outstanding, comprehensive clinical training experience in all procedures and other aspects of Allergy and Immunology with the goal of graduating trainees well prepared and confident in handling any clinical challenge in the specialty

1. The program will provide the opportunity to apply immunological theories, principals, and techniques to the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of a broad spectrum of allergic and immunologic disorders.
   • 50% of the program will be devoted to direct patient care activities through supervised patient care clinical programs in ambulatory areas, and through the inpatient and consultation services.
   • The ambulatory experience will include a sufficient number of adult and pediatric patients for each fellow to gain experience and competence in the care of patients with asthma, allergic disorders and immunologic diseases.
   • The inpatient experience will also include a sufficient number of adult and pediatric patients for each of the fellows through consultation experiences. There will be a diversity of patients, ages, and diagnoses to represent the breadth of the specialty.
2. The clinical programs will be complemented by scholarly activities through conferences, lectures, evidence-based medicine conferences, journal clubs, seminars, and self-improvement resources.
3. 25% of the program will be devoted to research.
   • A structured research experience will be provided that will lead to an understanding of the basic principles of study design, performance, analysis, and manuscript preparation and/or verbal reporting.

Goals

Fellows will have an opportunity to participate in and develop the following general core competencies to begin the independent practice of allergy and immunology including: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and system-based practice.

Objectives

After completion of the A/I training, a fellow should excel in the following:

1. Patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
2. Medical knowledge including both the clinical and basic sciences that involve our specialty and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
3. Practice-based learning and improvement that involves investigation and evaluation of your own patient care, appraisal and assimilation of scientific evidence, and improvements in patient care.
4. Interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective transfer of information between patients, their families, and other healthcare professionals.
5. Professionalism as manifested through a commitment to carry out professional responsibilities, adhere to ethical principles and to be sensitive to the ethnic and racial diversity of our patient population.
6. Systems-based practice as manifested by actions that demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the large context and system of healthcare and the ability to call on system resources to improve patient care.
