PhD Course Registration

This page is intended to serve as a resource for students in the Medical Sciences PhD Program. Information may not be relevant or applicable to students in other programs. 

Number of Credits 

Unless you have received approval from the PhD Program, you are expected to register for the number of credit hours indicated in the table below. Lab Rotations, Directed Research, and Dissertation Research hours can be adjusted to meet the total credit hour requirement each semester.

Permits

Most courses will require a permit. Use the request form below to request them. Permits may take 48-72 hours to be issued and you will receive an email once they are issued.

Seminars

Students are required to register for Bioscience Seminar every Fall & Spring semester. Students are also required to register for their concentration seminar, per the guidelines below: 

  • Allergy, Immunology, & Infectious Disease + Molecular Medicine Seminar - registration required every Fall & Spring
  • Cardiovascular Biology + Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology Seminar - registration required once per year, in the semester you are presenting 
  • Neuroscience - registration required once per year, in the semester you are presenting 

If you register for two seminars in a single semester, a permit is required. 

Student Responsibilities

It is your responsibility to: 

  1) confirm the courses that you intend to register for with your concentration coordinator
2) clear any holds on your account prior to the registration deadline
3) request your permits at least two days before the registration deadline
4) register accurately and on time. 

The PhD office is happy to assist with your registration if you have any questions.  


How to Register

  1. Log into my.usf.edu using your NetID and password.
  2. Select My Resources > OASIS (Student)
  3. Select Student
  4. Select Registration
  5. Select Register, Add, or Drop Classes
  6. Enter the CRNs of the courses you intend to take (adjust the number of credit hours for variable-credit courses if needed)
  7. Click Submit
  8. Confirm that all of your registrations were received, and that your total number of credits is accurate

May 17 - End of drop/add week 
June 29 - Withdrawal deadline
July 19 - End of term

August 23 - Registration deadline
August 26 - First day of classes
August 30 - End of drop/add week 
October 26 - Withdrawal deadline
December 12 - End of term

Summer & Fall 2024 Courses

Courses offered for the PhD program are listed on the spreadsheets below. If you are interested in a course not listed here, please check with your concentration coordinator before registering. 

Using the CRNs listed on the spreadsheets and the requirements outlined in the PhD Handbook, request your permits and register for: 

  1. Required core courses 
  2. Required concentration courses
  3. Bioscience Seminar (every Fall & Spring)
  4. Concentration seminar (as required by your concentration guidelines, listed above)
  5. Directed or Dissertation Research (make sure to register for the correct section based on your concentration)
  6. Electives

Satisfactory Academic Progress Reminder

In order to remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA and earn a grade of “S” in all S/U courses (including research courses). Students must achieve a “B” or better (B- does not count) in all required courses.
