Education

  • PhD, Biomechanics and Movement Science, University of Delaware, 2001
  • MPT, Physical Therapy, University of Delaware, 1993
  • AB, History, Stanford University, 1989

Research Interests

  • Research Focus: Skeletal muscle physiology with an emphasis on healthy aging and muscle fatigue in clinical populations, ranging from HIV to low-back pain. In the Integrative and Applied Muscle Biology (IAMB) Laboratory, I use methods ranging from function testing to molecular biology to evaluate muscle function at the level of the organism, organ, tissue, cell and molecular levels in human an animal models. A recently-completed study, funded by the NIH, examined the use of Trimetazidine-HCl as a possible intervention for the enhancement of aging muscle performance. Additional areas of interest include central and peripheral aspects of fatigue, nutritional interventions to improve health and the clinical use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation.
