Biography

Dr. Shaw is a Professor and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies for the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. The focus of his lab is to understand the mechanisms bacteria used in the infectious process with a goal of developing new treatments options that minimize the emergence of resistance. They place a specific emphasis on Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), although they also study other members of the ESKAPE pathogens as well. They use next generation sequencing tools to uncover molecular targets for therapeutic intervention, as well as their downstream effects on bacterial behavior and infectious capacity. They have significant expertise with RNAseq, employing it to explore the influence of sigma factors, two-component systems and DNA binding proteins on pathogenic processes. More recently, they have engaged in global studies of sRNAs, and their influence on species specific behavior and the evolution of pathogenesis.
