A stroke is a form of brain damage that can lead to long-term disability and death. Many of the risk factors for stroke are very common, including:

  • High Blood Pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High Cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Sleep Apnea

Many strokes are preventable. Here are some tips that may help reduce your risk of stroke:

  • Get screened for high blood pressure at least every 2 years, especially if you have a family history of high blood pressure
  • Have your cholesterol checked
  • If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and heart disease, follow your doctor's treatment recommendations
  • Follow a healthy diet
  • Quit smoking
  • Exercise regularly
  • If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption to no more than 1 to 2 alcoholic drinks a day
