Education

The following outlines the strategic plan goals and objectives, by program area, for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine education mission.

  • Goal 1: Attract the best and brightest learners from a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants.

    • Maintain current, outstanding MCAT, GPA metrics and high-quality undergraduate institutions of matriculating students in the Core and SELECT MD programs.
    • Increase merit-based, need-based and URM scholarship funding for students.

    Goal 2: Provide a nurturing and supportive environment that strives for excellence academically, professionally, and personally.

    • Foster an environment that promotes resilience and prevents burnout among medical students.
    • Strengthen and overhaul career advising systems to optimize outcomes of the residency match process. (LCME CQI Element 11.2)
    • Improve strategy for communicating to student, helping them differentiate and recognize essential communication, and giving them more control over the announcements they receive.
    • Improve the full range of services around financial aid assistance and debt management services/counseling.
    • Enhance targeted support for student affinity groups that may have specific needs to provide a more inclusive and supportive environment.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Increase use of augmented and virtual reality to enhance understanding of crucial medical concepts.
    • Enhance Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA) curriculum by providing a discipline-specific context to the AAMC’s EPAs.
    • Replace aging and increasingly expensive evaluation software solution.

    Goal 4: Enhance teaching excellence and commitment by providing practical resources, faculty development and support necessary to achieve the institution’s and faculty’s goals.

    • Recruit, retain, and develop world-class UME educators.
    • Improve dissemination of faculty evaluations data in order to provide better student feedback on teaching and assessment (LCME CQI Element 8.5)
    • Expand faculty development opportunities specific to teaching and assessment.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Empower UME students to succeed in extracurricular pursuits that strengthen and enhance their potential as future physicians and scientists.
    • Enhance administrative infrastructure to support student research opportunities.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Optimize new downtown campus to accommodate evolving student and curricular needs.
    • Utilize technologies to optimize financial aid, debt management and student research services.
    • Optimize use of technology to enhance early identification of at-risk learners and provide services to optimize their academic success.

    Goal 7: Create and promote a culturally competent and inclusive environment that fosters and supports a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners and actively pursues to eliminate systemic racism within its programs.

    • More fully develop and mature pipeline programming to enhance pool of qualified URM applicants across the continuum of medical education.
    • Increase integration of cultural humility, health impacts of systemic racism, and healthcare disparities content into the curriculum. 
    • Support recruitment of diverse faculty and staff.

    • Partner with programs to recruit a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants to serve our diverse patient community and ensure that our program leadership has the knowledge to proactively plan recruitment strategies and engage applicants to meet this goal.

    Goal 2: Provide a nurturing and supportive environment that strives for excellence academically, professionally, and personally.

    • Partner with programs to nurture the development of resilient and professionally successful resident physicians.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Partner with programs to develop resident physicians who apply health systems science to team-based practice.

    Goal 4: Enhance teaching excellence and commitment by providing practical resources, faculty development and support necessary to achieve the institution’s and faculty’s goals.

    • Partner with affiliate sites and programs to enhance faculty’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes to teach and train resident physicians who will be ready for their future practice of medicine.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Partner with programs to support learner and faculty research and scholarly activity.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Meet/exceed accreditation requirements and collaborate with affiliates towards achievement of their missions.

    Goal 7: Create and promote a culturally competent and inclusive environment that fosters and supports a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners and actively pursues to eliminate systemic racism within its programs.

    • Partner with programs to foster an inclusive learning environment that works towards minimizing health disparities.
  • Goal 1: Attract the best and brightest learners from a diverse pool of highly qualified applicants.

    • Expand the domestic applicant pool to both MS and PhD programs to include students outside of Florida and the Southeast.
    • Maintain or increase the number of URM applicants and matriculants.
    • Increase the size of the MD/PhD and low-enrollment MS programs. 

    Goal 2: Provide a nurturing and supportive environment that strives for excellence academically, professionally, and personally.

    • Improve career advising and expand professional workshops for MS and PhD students.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Enhance online course quality and utilization of instructional design tools in MS courses.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Successfully compete for NIH T32 training grants.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Improve course distance delivery technology and access to computational resources for big data research projects and instructional design tools for course enhancements.
    • Create a teaching lab for training MS, PhD, and research fellows.

    Goal 7: Create and promote a culturally competent and inclusive environment that fosters and supports a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners and actively pursues to eliminate systemic racism within its programs.

    • Increase awareness of systemic racism and inequities in Biomedical Research.

    • Continue to enroll a diverse and highly qualified student body.

    Goal 2: Provide a nurturing and supportive environment that strives for excellence academically, professionally, and personally.

    • Strengthen Academic Performance Review Subcommittee (APRSC) by further developing early detection system that provides students with needed resources.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Continue to provide a high-quality DPT education that embraces clinical reasoning, professionalism, and lifelong learning.

    Goal 4: Enhance teaching excellence and commitment by providing practical resources, faculty development and support necessary to achieve the institution’s and faculty’s goals.

    • Increase overall faculty teaching expertise.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Increase opportunities for research participation and dissemination.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Continue to improve educational experience.

    • Increase cultural competence of PT students, faculty, and staff.

    • Increase recruitment of diverse students in Athletic Training programs.

    Goal 2: Provide a nurturing and supportive environment that strives for excellence academically, professionally, and personally.

    • Meet or exceed state and national Board of Certification (BOC) pass rates.
    • Maintain a high graduation rate of AT students.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Secure enhanced and diverse educational opportunities for AT students.

    Goal 4: Enhance teaching excellence and commitment by providing practical resources, faculty development and support necessary to achieve the institution’s and faculty’s goals.

    • Continue teaching excellence and commitment.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Increase student participation in research and scholarly activities.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Determine best organizational alignment allowing faculty, student, and staff to have educational support and resources.

    Goal 7: Create and promote a culturally competent and inclusive environment that fosters and supports a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners and actively pursues to eliminate systemic racism within its programs.

    • Fully integrate health disparities information, inclusive language education, and global cultural competence across curriculums.

    • Recruit and matriculate student cohorts with admission metrics (GPA, admissions test scores) at or above the national average for PA programs.
    • Identify and develop students from diverse backgrounds to achieve academic qualifications of competitive applicants to the program.

    • Ensure student support services which limit student attrition and facilitate on-time graduation.

    Goal 3: Create & provide high-quality educational programming conducive to learning & innovation while maintaining an environment that fosters ongoing development.

    • Enhance participation by PA students in interprofessional exercises.

    Goal 4: Enhance teaching excellence and commitment by providing practical resources, faculty development and support necessary to achieve the institution’s and faculty’s goals.

    • Enhance annual participation by PT faculty in institutional faculty development programs.
    • Enhance attendance by program faculty at regional or national educational conferences.

    Goal 5: Provide and support opportunities for high quality scholarly activities and training experiences.

    • Create opportunities for all PA students in participate in scholarly activities.

    Goal 6: Ensure the physical infrastructure and educational support resources necessary to  produce  exceptional  learning  experiences  and  educational  outcomes  in  alignment  with  accreditation requirements and institutional mission.

    • Maintain physical infrastructure for program educational and administrative functions in alignment with ARC-PA accreditation standards.

    Goal 7: Create and promote a culturally competent and inclusive environment that fosters and supports a diverse community of faculty, staff, and learners and actively pursues to eliminate systemic racism within its programs.

    • Participation of all program students, faculty and staff in formal programs addressing the effects of systemic racism on education and healthcare.
