General Psychiatry Residency
Overview
Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the University of South Florida (USF) Morsani College of Medicine General Psychiatry Residency Program. We are honored to lead a program defined by strong clinical training, interdisciplinary systems of care, and academic excellence where residents, faculty and staff thrive together.
One of our greatest strengths—and what we value most—is the collaborative, collegial environment that has been intentionally fostered over the years. Residents and attending physicians work side by side in a culture grounded in respect, mentorship, and shared learning. Resident voices are central to this culture, and ongoing feedback from our trainees plays a vital role in shaping the curriculum, clinical experiences, and overall direction of the program.
The USF Psychiatry Residency Program has been training residents since 1970, and we offer comprehensive training across the full spectrum of psychiatric practice, integrating somatic, psychosocial, systems-based and trauma-informed approaches to evidence-based mental health care. Advocacy is a core value of our program, and we are committed to training psychiatrists who champion mental health equity and patient-centered care. A defining feature of our program is the strong partnership between the University of South Florida and our enriching teaching sites. The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital provides exceptional training opportunities and meaningful experiences serving Veterans with complex psychiatric needs. Tampa General Hospital, TGH Healthpark, USF Student Health Services, IBIS Healthcare, among others provide broad clinical experience across diverse settings, with progressive responsibility and thoughtful supervision throughout training. Didactic education is protected every Thursday afternoon, providing dedicated time for lectures, case-based learning, skills development, and collaboration across training levels.
Our mission is to prepare our graduates for fulfilling careers in general psychiatry, subspecialty practice, academic medicine, leadership, research and advocacy. Located in the diverse and vibrant Tampa Bay region, we are exceptionally fortunate that many of our graduates choose to remain in Florida, continuing to serve patients and communities throughout the state and strengthening the psychiatric workforce in the region. We invite you to explore our program and consider joining our academic community where USF also stands for “U Stay Forever”.
