Craniofacial Trauma
Division Overview
The Division of Craniofacial Trauma provides comprehensive management of acute and chronic facial injuries involving the frontal bone, orbits, nasal bones, zygomaticomaxillary complex, maxilla, mandible, dentoalveolar structures, facial soft tissues, and peripheral nerves.
Our multidisciplinary approach emphasizes restoration of facial form and function, including airway, vision, occlusion, facial movement, mastication, speech, skeletal symmetry, and soft-tissue contour.
Clinical Care
We evaluate and treat facial fractures, malocclusion, orbital injuries, facial lacerations, soft-tissue defects, facial nerve injuries, and post-traumatic deformities.
We provide individualized management according to fracture pattern, displacement, functional impairment, associated injuries, and timing of presentation. Treatment options may include observation, closed reduction, maxillomandibular fixation, open reduction and internal fixation, orbital reconstruction, soft-tissue or nerve repair, bone grafting, scar revision, and secondary craniofacial reconstruction. We utilize cutting-edge technology for advanced surgical planning to optimize patient outcomes.
Our surgeons collaborate with trauma surgery, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, dentistry, orthodontics, and other specialties as needed.
Research Focus
Our research efforts focus on improving the evaluation, treatment, and long-term outcomes of patients with craniofacial trauma. Areas of interest include surgical techniques, fracture fixation, bony reconstruction, facial nerve recovery, post-traumatic deformity, patient-reported outcomes, and the prevention of complications.
The division also seeks to translate clinical experience and emerging evidence into more effective, individualized treatment strategies to optimize patient care and outcomes.
Educational Initiatives
The division provides educational opportunities for medical students, residents, fellows, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with facial trauma.
Educational initiatives emphasize a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy, systematic trauma evaluation, interpretation of maxillofacial imaging, operative indications, fracture management, multidisciplinary decision-making, and postoperative care. Educational experiences include didactic classroom learning and case discussions, simulation and 3D planning sessions, hands-on anatomy lab experiences, clinical rotations with operative experience, and scholarly activity.
