Academic Philosophy

"The academic environment should be one that stimulates lifelong learning and creativity while also instilling a respect for diverse viewpoints. Whether in the laboratory or the classroom, I strive to lead by example and inspire others."

Interdisciplinary and Emerging Signature Programs

  • Biomedical Engineering & Nanomedicine
  • Neuroscience

Research Interests

  • My research focuses on central nervous system injury and disease, conducting both pre-clinical and clinical studies in the development of potential treatments. Currently, I am the Co-PI on a randomized controlled trial on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) to improve chronic symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with or without post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in veterans. Recruitment begins Summer 2024. I also have studies on the therapeutic value of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) as a complementary treatment for PTSD in veterans. We are currently enrolling in these studies. My preclinical studies focus on the role of inflammation as a major contributing factor to neuropathology of stroke and TBI and as an ideal target for interventions that produce neuroprotection and neurorestoration, specifically,cell-based therapies.
