Biography

Dr. Shyam Kottilil MD. Ph.D. is a Professor of Medicine and the Vice Dean of Clinical Research at the University of South Floria, Tampa, FL. He is also the Director of the Center for Liver Diseases (COLD) and the Clinical Director of the Institute of Translational Virology and Innovations (ITVI). Previously, he was the interim Director of the Institute of Human Virology and Professor of Medicine and the Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore MD. Dr. Kottilil continues to work as the Scientific Director of the NIH-District of Columbia Partnership for AIDS Progress. He received his medical degree from Govt Medical College, Trichur, India, Ph.D (immunology of HIV infection) from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, completed a residency in Internal Medicine from Brown University, Rhode Island and a fellowship in infectious diseases rom the National Institutes of Health under Dr. Anthony S. Fauci. His specific interests include pathogenesis of chronic viral infections and translational research to eradicating chronic persistent viral infections by targeting the virus and the host. He has conducted several pivotal investigator-initiated studies in hepatitis B and C and has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Kottilil served as one of the founding members of the US National Hepatitis C Treatment Guidance Panel. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and recipient of the Hinda and Richard Rosenthal award from the American College of Physicians (ACP) in 2019. Dr. Kottilil is elected as a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA), American Society of the Liver Diseases (FAASLD), Royal College of Physicians, London (FRCP) and Mastership of the American College of Physicians (MACP).
