Chest & Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Overview

Complex injuries or defects of the chest and abdominal wall may result from tumor removal, trauma, infection, radiation treatment or previous surgery. These conditions can affect strength, stability, movement, breathing, and protection of the underlying organs.

Our Thoracic and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction team provides specialized care focused on restoring durable coverage, structural support, and function.

Clinical Content

Each patient receives a comprehensive evaluation along with assessment of the wound, surrounding tissues and underlying structures. Treatment planning may include review of imaging, previous operations, infections and previous treatments along with past medical history.

Reconstruction is individualized based on the size, location, cause of the defect. Some wounds may be treated with rearrangement of nearby tissue, while more complex defects may require tissue transferred from another area of the body. Additionally, permanent or absorbable mesh may be utilized to optimize the overall outcome.

Conditions & Treatment

We treat:

  • Chest wall defects after tumor removal, trauma, or infection

  • Abdominal wall defects after tumor removal, trauma, or infection

  • Abdominal wall hernias

  • Complex or chronic wounds after previous surgery or radiation

Treatment may include wound preparation, local tissue rearrangement, adjacent soft tissue and pedicled flaps, microsurgical free flap reconstruction, mesh reinforcement, or other techniques to restore coverage and support.

Why Choose Us?

Thoracic and abdominal wall reconstruction often requires coordination across several specialties. Our reconstructive surgeons work closely with thoracic surgeons, general surgeons, surgical oncologists, trauma surgeons, infectious disease specialties and other healthcare professionals to provide patients with the best possible multidisciplinary care and expertise.

Our goal is to provide a durable reconstruction that protects important structures, optimizes healing, and helps patients return to normal activities as quickly as possible.

What to Expect

Your Consultation

Your surgeon will examine the affected area, review imaging and prior treatments, and discuss the available reconstructive options. In complex cases, your surgery may be coordinated with other surgical teams.

Recovery & Follow-Up

Recovery depends on the size and location of the defect and the type of reconstruction performed. It may include temporary drains, activity restrictions, wound care, and close follow-up. Our team will closely care for you while in the hospital and following discharge in our clinic to monitor healing and address any concerns throughout your recovery.
