About the Institute for Translational Virology & Innovation
Groundbreaking research making an impact
The USF Health Institute for Translational Virology and Innovation (ITVI) is dedicated to tackling the world’s most urgent viral and microbial threats. As a Center of Excellence for the Global Virus Network (GVN), ITVI unites world-renowned scientists and clinicians to translate groundbreaking research into real-world impact for patients and communities.
Founded by legendary virologist Dr. Robert C. Gallo, ITVI is driving discovery across current programs in viral oncology, HIV and HTLV-1, microbial drivers of cancer, and functional HIV cure research. Future initiatives are expanding into human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), respiratory pathogens, arboviruses, and pandemic preparedness through genomic surveillance and bioinformatics.
With cutting-edge facilities, global collaborations, and direct integration into Tampa General Hospital’s Cancer Institute, ITVI brings scientific innovation from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside. Anchored at USF Health in Tampa, the Institute is also training the next generation of virology leaders while fostering biotech partnerships that fuel innovation and strengthen pandemic preparedness.
The Philosophy of ITVI
"We ought not to be embarrassed of appreciating the truth
and of obtaining it wherever it comes from,
even if it comes from races distant and nations different from us.
Nothing should be dearer to the seeker of truth than the truth itself,
and there is no deterioration of the truth,
nor belittling either of one who speaks it or conveys it."
