PharmD Roadmap
Find Your Pathway
There are many pathways students can take towards a pharmacy education. Traditionally, Pharmacy programs are a 4-year, in-person program. Candidates must complete undergraduate prerequisite courses prior to applying to Pharmacy School. Students cannot apply to Pharmacy School straight out of High School since in most cases, required undergraduate pre-requisite courses have not been completed. Below you will see multiple pathways that we recomment to students. In Pathway 1 or Pathway 3, a gap year is acceptable commonly due to pursuing an MS to improve gpa, needing to complete additional required courses, or gain more experience to confirmdecision to apply. Anyone pursuing a PharmD degree can expect to take 6-8 years in total.
Judy Genshaft Honors College alum and PharmD student Yasmine Helwa sat down and discussed her journey through the University of South Florida and USF Health and how the combination of the Honors College and the Taneja College of Pharmacy have prepared her for her career after college.
Pathway 1: Bachelor’s Degree Pathway (7-8 Years)
- Apply and be accepted to a 4-year undergraduate program with intention of earning a Bachelor’s degree (USF Undergraduate) OR transfer from a 2-year college to a 4-year with intention of earning a Bachelor’s degree (Hillsborough College -> USF Undergraduate)
- Spend 3-4 years pursuing any undergraduate science or health major while ensuring all required prerequisites are being incorporated. Examples of majors would be Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry, Health Sciences. Keep in mind some majors may require that you take a couple of extra courses in order to fulfill required pre-requisites for Pharmacy
- In the final 1-2 semesters of the undergraduate program, apply to Pharmacy School.
- If accepted, begin 4-year Pharmacy School (aka PharmD program) starting in the fall following graduation with a Bachelor’s degree.
Pathway 2: Honors College/PharmD Accelerated Pathway (7 years)
- Apply and receive acceptance to USF
- Once accepted to USF, apply to the Judy Genshaft Honors College and be accepted, then declare the Pharmacy track (Biomedical Sciences Major)
- Spend 3 years pursuing the BS in Biomedical Sciences with Honors and completing all required pre-requisites
- Apply to Pharmacy school during the fall semester of 3rd year undergrad
- If accepted, begin 4-year Pharmacy School (aka PharmD program) during what would be the 4th year of undergrad. Students in this pathway will receive their BS after completion of the 1st Pharmacy School year, then continue to complete the remaining 3 years of Pharmacy School.
Pathway 3: Associates Degree Pathway (6-7 Years)
- Attend a 2-year undergraduate program and plan to complete all required prerequisite courses (Note: It is advised to pursue a Pre-Pharmacy track in order to complete the pre-requisite courses. In many cases, 2-year colleges will not offer ALL required prerequisite courses. Therefore, it is advised to pursue those as a non-degree seeking student at a 4-year institution OR through an accredited online program).
- In the final 1-2 semesters of the AA program, apply to Pharmacy School
- If accepted, begin 4-year Pharmacy School (aka PharmD program) starting in the fall following completion of ALL required pre-requisites
