Fellowships
Emergency Radiology Fellowship
About the Fellowship
The Emergency Radiology Fellowship at USF Health, based at Tampa General Hospital (TGH), is a one-year advanced training program designed to prepare radiologists for expert practice in acute care and trauma imaging. This fellowship provides intensive clinical exposure at one of the nation’s busiest and most complex academic hospitals.
TGH is a 1,200+ bed tertiary referral center, the primary teaching hospital for USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, and serves as a Level I Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and regional transplant center. Fellows benefit from unparalleled clinical experience in a multidisciplinary, high-acuity environment, where radiology plays a central role in patient management.
Program Highlights
- Duration: 12 months
- Location: Tampa General Hospital (downtown Tampa, FL)
- Annual ED Visits: Over 110,000
- Annual Imaging Volume: Over 110,000 studies
Clinical Training
Fellows gain hands-on experience with a wide spectrum of emergency and trauma cases, working side-by-side with subspecialized faculty.
Trauma Imaging
- Polytrauma protocols and rapid triage imaging
- Blunt and penetrating trauma: solid organ injuries, vascular trauma, complex fractures
- Immediate consultative role in multidisciplinary trauma management
Non-Trauma Acute Imaging
- Stroke imaging and advanced neurovascular CT/MR techniques
- Acute chest pain: pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, coronary CT angiography, “triple rule-out” protocols
- Acute abdomen: bowel ischemia, perforation, GI bleeding, hepatobiliary emergencies
- Cardiac, OB/Gyn, and pediatric emergencies
Advanced Imaging Techniques
- Coronary CT angiography with advanced reconstruction
- CT perfusion for acute stroke evaluation
- Rapid MRI protocols in acute settings
- Full-body trauma CT with high-speed multi-detector scanners
Fellows actively interpret CT, MRI, ultrasound, and digital radiographs, under the guidance of faculty in neuroradiology, cardiothoracic imaging, body imaging, and MSK.
Non-Interpretive and Leadership Training
Beyond image interpretation, fellows develop skills critical for leading in emergency radiology:
- Workflow optimization for high-volume emergency settings
- Direct communication with emergency medicine, trauma surgery, neurosurgery, cardiology, and critical care teams
- Mass casualty preparedness and hospital disaster planning
- Protocol design and imaging quality improvement initiatives
- Teaching opportunities for USF residents and medical students in the emergency radiology rotation
