Biography

Nicholas David W. Smith is a licensed psychologist and assistant professor with joint appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences and Pediatrics. Dr. Smith is Board Certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and a Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Within Agency Trainer. He specializes in the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with psychiatric, behavioral, and medical challenges. He supervises psychology interns and advanced practicum students in the Psychological Assessment, Outpatient Psychotherapy, and PCIT Clinics at the Silver Center for Child Development. Dr. Smith also provides psychological services as part of various clinical trials for children with chronic illnesses and genetic disorders across USF Health. Dr. Smith’s research interests focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of family focused, evidence-based treatments in response to disruptive behaviors (e.g., PCIT) and pediatric illness (e.g., Teaming Up to Support T1D Through Telehealth) and psychosocial factors contributing to youth quality of life and resilience. He serves on Child & Family Behavior Therapy Editorial Board and the PCIT International Communication Task Force. Dr. Smith earned a PhD from the University of South Florida. He completed his clinical child/pediatric doctoral internship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Mailman Center for Child Development and a two year clinical/research pediatric psychology postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He joined the USF Health Faculty in 2022.
