What to Expect

The USF Health Spinal Cord Injury Fellowship offers comprehensive training across the full continuum of SCI care, providing fellows with extensive exposure to both acute and chronic spinal cord injury management. Fellows gain hands-on experience with ventilator management, spasticity and pain procedures, baclofen pump management, joint and Botox injections, urodynamics testing, and specialized outpatient SCI care. A fellow-driven curriculum, weekly board-focused didactics, customizable clinical rotations, and mentorship from experienced multidisciplinary faculty create an ideal learning environment. Supported by dedicated rehabilitation professionals and robust research opportunities through USF and the James A. Haley VA hospital, fellows develop the clinical expertise, autonomy, and academic foundation needed to become leaders in spinal cord injury medicine. Opportunities to participate in adaptive sports and community engagement further enrich the fellowship experience.

Visiting Resident Elective

Elective: Advanced Outpatient Neurorehabilitation

This 4-week advanced elective provides immersive training in longitudinal care for SCI, MS, and ALS populations.

Primary Settings:

  • JAHVA SCI/Polytrauma Building

  • 4 Weeks Length

  • Faculty-Led Supervision

"Residents will conduct comprehensive annual evaluations, manage neurogenic bladder/bowel, and participate in spasticity chemodenervation clinics under supervision of Dr. Yu and team."

  1. Chronic Complications
    Master autonomic dysreflexia, skin risk, and bone health.

  2. Advanced Technology
    Exposure to exoskeleton robotics and seating clinics.

  3. Longitudinal Care
    Coordinate complex DME and community reintegration.

My experience included comprehensive exposure to inpatient, outpatient, and home care settings, as well as specialized ventilator unit management and onsite long-term care facilities. I gained hands-on expertise in advanced procedures such as botulinum toxin injections and intrathecal baclofen pump management, ensuring optimal spasticity control and functional outcomes. This robust training environment provided a strong foundation in both acute and chronic care for complex neurorehabilitation patients.
