Applying for financial aid is an annual process. Financial aid may include loans, scholarships, employment opportunities, and other resources designed to help students meet educational expenses. Students who wish to be considered for federal student aid should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for each academic year they plan to enroll.

The FAFSA is used to determine eligibility for federal financial aid programs, including Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans. Students are encouraged to submit the FAFSA as early as possible to allow sufficient time for processing and completion of any additional requirements that may be necessary before financial aid eligibility can be determined

  • Students enrolled in the MD program should submit the FAFSA using the University of South Florida school code listed below.

    USF School Code: 001537

Complete the FAFSA online at: FAFSA Application (Federal Student Aid)

Before completing the FAFSA, students should create a StudentAid.gov account (FSA ID). Instructions are available below:

Students who are married may need to include contributor information from their spouse when completing the FAFSA. Spouses who will serve as contributors must create their own StudentAid.gov account (FSA ID), even if they do not have a Social Security number.

  • The FAFSA must be completed each academic year students wish to be considered for federal financial aid.

  • After submitting the FAFSA, students should regularly monitor their Student Self Service account and USF email account for updates regarding financial aid eligibility, requests for additional documentation, and outstanding financial aid requirements.

Additional information may be required before financial aid eligibility can be finalized.

  • A percentage of FAFSA applications processed by the U.S. Department of Education are selected for verification. If selected, students will receive instructions through Student Self Service regarding any additional documentation that may be required.

Verification should be completed promptly to avoid delays in financial aid processing. Financial aid eligibility cannot be finalized and funds cannot be disbursed until all verification requirements have been satisfied.

Students selected for verification should regularly monitor:

    • Student Self Service

    • USF email

    • Outstanding financial aid requirements

Note: Verification requirements should be completed as soon as possible after notification to prevent delays in the processing and disbursement of financial aid.

  • Students experiencing documented special circumstances that affect their ability to contribute toward educational expenses may request a Professional Judgment review. Financial aid administrators evaluate these requests on a case-by-case basis in accordance with federal regulations.

Additional information regarding Professional Judgment requests is available on the Professional Judgment for Special Circumstances webpage.

  • The FAFSA is free to complete. Students should use caution when responding to unsolicited financial aid offers or requests for personal information. Official university communications regarding financial aid will be sent through USF systems using your official USF email address.

    Students should remember the following:

    • Never pay a fee to complete the FAFSA.

    • Use only the official FAFSA website to submit financial aid applications.

    • Protect personal and financial information from unknown sources.

    • Review communications carefully before responding to requests for information.
